The ABCs Of Minerals: Part 1

The ABCs Of Minerals: Part 1 – How To Achieve Healthy Mineral Balance For Optimal Immune Function

On this episode of Food As Medicine TV, we went on the road to visit our friends at Eidon Minerals in Poway, California. They are an industry leader in top-quality mineral supplements and the perfect experts to help us understand the ABCs of minerals.

Minerals are the foundation of all life and essential for optimal health. Every cell in our body depends on minerals to function correctly.

As a society, we have a drastically inadequate intake of minerals. In fact, data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys have reported a high prevalence of mineral inadequacies in Americans, especially calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium.

Eidon Minerals founder and CEO, Rick Wagner, is a clinical nutritionist. We share a similar level of passion for integrative and holistic health.

Like me and many other practitioners, Rick got into this field because of his own health issues and he shares how minerals were the key to getting his health back.

Every human needs to know this information, no matter where you are in your health process.

What Minerals Are

Minerals are substances that are not only essential to our wellbeing, but to our very existence.

Did you know our body requires minerals to transport oxygen, grow bones, balance electrolytes, build your immune system, and perform countless chemical reactions?

Our body must maintain certain levels of minerals and the level of one mineral will affect the level of another. This means that having high or low levels of any one mineral or combination of minerals causes some serious domino effects on our health, especially our thyroid, adrenals, bones, and immune system.

Obstacles To Achieving Appropriate Mineral Intake And Balance

You may be wondering why it’s so difficult to maintain mineral balance today.

Our food supply and overall environment are dramatically different than it was 100 years ago.

Did you know that we have to eat 3 apples today to get the nutrient density of 1 apple in 1940?

These changes have created many obstacles to achieving the optimal intake and balance of minerals, including:

  • Depleted soil due to the onset of genetically modified foods, over-producing single crops, and not rotating the soil
  • Use of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides which impedes the uptake of minerals from the soil by plants.
  • Excessive consumption of processed or overcooked foods, refined sugar, and grains
  • Excessive environmental toxins
  • Heavy metal overload, especially from dental amalgams and vaccines
  • Physical, mental, and emotional stress

Why Liquid Minerals Are Better Than Capsules Or Tablets

Rick is a big believer in liquid mineral supplements as the best source of delivery and I agree with him.

Here are the 6 reasons we discuss why you should use liquid minerals:

  1. They are easy to take and administer, even to children, the elderly, and animals. I give them to my toddler in his water or milk without a problem.
  2. They are in ionic form, which means that they are ready to use and do not need to be broken down by your body like a capsule or tablet. This makes them quickly and completely absorbable.
  3. They are utilized immediately by the body because they bypass the digestive system, which is especially helpful for those with digestive issues.
  4. They can be more precisely dosed, as there is no way to accurately determine how much of a solid mineral supplement a person will actually absorb.
  5. They are in their natural state.
  6. Results are often experienced immediately.

4 Steps You Can Take To Meet Your Daily Mineral Requirements

Every person has different mineral needs and these needs fluctuate over time based on age, diet, and external stressors.

Here are 4 steps you can take to ensure you are meeting your daily mineral requirements:

  1. Do A Hair Mineral Analysis. At The Whole Journey, we always say, “don’t guess at it, test it!” This is the most accurate method to determine your individual mineral status, outside of symptomatic recommendations. Eidon Minerals offers a comprehensive hair mineral analysis through an independent clinic, Bio-Trend Technologies. The analysis includes personalized mineral recommendations, including how much to take and when to take them. You can do this completely on your own without having to rely on or pay a health practitioner.
  2. Supplement With A High-Quality Ionic Multiple Mineral. Minerals work in a precise balance to one another. Taking a multiple mineral formula can cover all your bases and provide you with a stable foundation to maintain mineral balance. We love Eidon’s Multiple Mineral formula because it reflects the most current understanding of the optimal mineral ratios so that they do not imbalance one another.
  3. Incorporate Sea Salt Into Your Diet. When we crave salt, it’s usually because we have a mineral deficiency. But if we’re taking in table salt, the bad stuff, that’s actually creating more of a mineral deficiency. Be sure to switch out your table salt for sea salt, as it contains every mineral you need, especially your electrolytes (sodium, chloride, magnesium, and potassium). See our recent show on The Healing Benefits of Salt for the types of salt we recommend.
  4. Stop Drinking Distilled And Reverse Osmosis Water. If you are drinking these types of water, at a minimum you should add sea salt to every glass you drink. This will help replenish the minerals that were stripped from reverse osmosis or distilled water, otherwise, you are effectively rinsing your body out and not delivering adequate hydration to your cells. You could also add 10 drops of Eidon Liquid Electrolytes to each glass.

Answers To Your Mineral FAQs

We polled our community for their questions before filming and then asked Rick to answer some of your most common mineral questions:

  1. What is the difference between organic and inorganic minerals? Organic minerals are inorganic elements that are bound to a carbon atom. The presence of the carbon atom, by definition, creates an organic compound. It does not improve the bioavailability of the inorganic element as long as it is in its ionic state.
  2. What is the difference between ionic and colloidal? An ionic element is in its elemental individual state with an incomplete outside electron shell. A colloidal solution is one where the elements in the solution are in a perpetual state of suspension and are not settling out to the bottom of the vessel they are contained in. Eidon minerals are ionic, colloidal, and elemental.
  3. Where do Eidon Minerals come from? Many of our mineral solutions use mineral salts as a raw material derived from concentrated ore deposits. Our silica is not derived from a mineral salt and our sulfur is MSM.
  4. Why do most minerals have no taste? Most of our minerals are taste-free because there are no carbon atoms, preservatives, flavorings, or sweeteners present in the solutions. The minerals that have distinctive tastes are magnesium, calcium, zinc (when your tissues are replete – when they are deficient, you won’t be able to taste zinc), and copper.
  5. Why don’t you have to use any preservatives? Preservatives are not used as we start with biologically pure deionized water and use raw materials that don’t contain carbon or nitrogen. This is contrary to some of our competitors who are putting individual mineral elements into solutions of saltwater from the Great Salt Lake which has now been found to contain high levels of mercury.
  6. Do you test your raw materials for content and heavy metals as well as all of your finished goods? We follow all current cGMP supplement manufacturing practices.
