Eating Healthy at the Airport and On-the-go
Finding a healthy meal at the airport or on the go can be a daunting task, especially when most choices include cheeseburgers, fries, fried chicken and pizza. After some recent travels and lots of time in airports, we put together a “”healthy options”” list to keep you healthy when on the go.
Starbucks:
Perfect Oatmeal with nuts (skip the sugar, using honey instead and save the dried fruit for later for proper food combining.) Many SB menus don't advertise the oatmeal any longer, but they all have it, even internationally.
4 grams fiber
5 grams protein
UNO Chicago Grill:
Steamed seasonal veggies and whole grain brown rice with grilled chicken or fish. It's very rare to find a restaurant in the airport that offers brown rice…a huge bonus!
Smoothie King:
If you're craving something sweet, try their Pomegranate Punch with antioxidant-rich pomegranates, blueberries, bananas and apple juice. Ask for whey protein instead of soy protein and a boost of greens.
Panera Bread Company:
Turkey Artichoke on Foccacia (only eat half the bread) with a bowl of garden vegetable or black bean soup, or a salad with the dressing on the side and a cup of soup.
Jamba Juice:
Their grab and go options are fairly healthy. Try their salads (not the pasta) or their greens and grains wrap with quinoa or Greek goddess wrap, hot oatmeal and if you’re up for it, a shot of wheat grass to wash it down.
Sbarro:
Everyone thinks pizza and pasta and subs when they pass this place, but they actually have 5 great salads to choose from. Try their tomato-and-cucumber salad with olive oil and vinegar – add grilled chicken for more protein.
Chili’s-to-go:
Soup and salad or chili and a salad, fajitas (only eat ½ the amount of tortillas they give you), grilled salmon or chicken salad. When sitting down, they have a “guiltless” salmon with a side of black beans and steamed vegetables.
Chipotle:
A burrito bowl without cheese (add extra guacamole instead as a healthier fat option). They use clean meats without added hormones or antibiotics.
Rubio’s:
These guys don’t use lard, microwaves or freezers. Chili-lime salmon burrito with whole wheat tortilla, Blackened/grilled mahi burrito with whole wheat tortilla, Health Mex, no rice, get cabbage instead or unwrap the burrito and don’t eat the tortilla but eat the rice, any of the gourmet grilled tacos in a corn tortilla – get guacamole instead of cheese, grilled grand bowl, balsamic and roasted veggie salad, chopped salad
Au Bon Pain:
Wonderful little french cafe cart with plenty of healthy, tasty options. Try their French Moroccan tomato-lentil soup. It contains a good dose of fiber, b vitamins, and protein. The garlic and curry powder add antiseptic and antioxidant/anti-inflammatory benefits to this meal.
Subway:
Veggie Delite with Avocado is a good go-to sandwich. Get olive oil on it so that the fat can satiate you.
Wolfgang Puck Express:
Plenty of salads and healthy dishes to choose from.
California Pizza Kitchen:
Grilled Chicken and Vegetable Salad with Thai Peanut Dressing. Light and tasty.
Travel Healthy and Enjoy!
